Steve Wayne Hayes, age 77, passed away peacefully Sunday March 29, 2026 surrounded by family. Steve was born in Bellingham, WA, August 4, 1948 to Charles & Anita Hayes (Garvin). A celebration of Steve's life will be held at 2:00 PM Sunday June 7 at Glenn Echo Community Center, 7694 Goodwin Rd Everson, WA 98247.
Steve graduated from Meridian High School in 1967, proudly joined the Army in 1968 and served in the Vietnam War. After his time in the military, he started his career at Intalco (Alcoa) and retired at the age of 65.
Not only did Steve serve his country, but his community as well. He took it upon himself to help take care of all the stray cats and kittens that would come around his home. He would make sure every night that they all had food and water, and he would take them in to get their shots and be fixed. He even found homes for several kittens, and kept 2 for himself. Believe it or not, Mommy Kitty and Snoopy were his adopted cat kids.
Steve also enjoyed the outdoors (boy did he love being outside!), hunting with his buddies, fishing with his wife and camping with his girls. He also liked crabbing, clam digging, lots of barbecues, target shooting, and even taking long scenic drives to who knows where. But when you went with him, there was always something new to see!
Steve was preceded in death by his parents Charles & Anita Hayes, brother Chuck Hayes and two sisters, Gerry Bebee and Gladys Hayes
He is survived by his wife Elaine Bullock; two daughters, Shawna L. Zwiers (Brent) and Michelle A. Hayes; three granddaughters, Brittani A. Zwiers (Quinton DeGrasse), Sidney L. Zwiers and Bailee E. Hayes; two great-grandchildren, Avalee A. and Grayson J. DeGrasse; and many nieces and nephews.
Dad leaves behind a legacy of service, kindness, strength, humor, love and companionship that will continue to live on in the hearts of everyone who knew and loved him.
And I will never forget the...."Come on walk with me, talk with me"
I love you, Dad.
