SPC Cody Alan Douglas

SPC Cody Alan Douglas, age 23, of Bellingham passed away unexpectedly Sunday, March 2, 2014 at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas. He was born February 7, 1991 in Phoenix, Arizona. At a young age he moved to Texas and Washington.

Cody played soccer, football and baseball. He enjoyed camping or learning how to make a snow cave as a boy scout. Cody had a gift for languages; learning Spanish and Russian easily.

He traveled to Arizona to visit his Uncle Rick and his dad; he enjoyed fishing, shooting, and visiting historical sites. One summer traveled to Georgia to visit his friend, Mason Larsen and had a blast. Cody was given an opportunity of a lifetime when former neighbors paid his way to England to visit his friend, Chris Johnson; he saw several sights, but his most memorable one was to the Imperial War Museum.

As a young man, he took a detour and went down the wrong road, but learned a lot of hard lessons along the way and soon found his way back to where he needed to be. Cody did whatever was necessary, so that he could enlist in the Army and he accomplished that goal. He became an Infantryman and served one tour in Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom.

Cody touched the lives of everyone he met with his smile and sense of humor. Everyone he met soon became a friend. Cody loved Washington and couldn’t wait to come home every chance he got to see his family and his friends. He leaves behind numerous friends who mourn his passing and will miss his friendship tremendously. He also leaves behind his girlfriend, Nicky Fox, who made the last four months of his life a very happy one.

Mourning his loss, he is survived by his parents, Deborah K. Douglas and Dennis N. Thorley; sisters, Brandy Douglas and Kelli Hilligas; nieces, Drew and Ava; maternal grandmother, Peggy Shierrey. He will be missed by his Uncles Craig (Anabelle), Cedric (Tina), Rick (Lucinda), Eric, and Doug (Marianne) along with numerous cousins. Mourning his loss is Brian, Stacy, Chad, and Olivia Cain; they opened up their heart and home to Cody and treated him as one of the family.

A celebration of life memorial with military honors will be held Sunday, March 16, 2014, 1:00 PM at the Deming Log Show Grounds, 3295 Cedarville Road, Bellingham WA 98226.
