Shirley Lillian Bjorkland

Shirley Lillian Bjorkland, age 87, of Bellingham passed away Monday, January 16, 2023 in Bellingham. She was born August 13, 1935 in Los Angeles, California to parents William Leon and Arthella Virgie (Bigler) Tiernay. Shirley grew up in North Hollywood, California. In her youth, she was active in ballet, tap dancing, Camp Fire Girls and loved going to the beach. She graduated from North Hollywood High School.

 Later, she enrolled at California State University Northridge and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology in August of 1977. In 1979 she graduated from Los Angeles Pierce College with a degree in nursing. Shirley worked for many years as an RN in the psych ward at the Veterans Hospital in Los Angeles.

 After her retirement she moved to Bellingham and was active at the Bellingham Senior Center. She also enjoyed attending plays at Bellingham Theater Guild and performances at the Mount Baker Theater. One of her favorite activities was participating in holiday family gatherings.

She loved traveling with her high school girlfriends.  She also made a very special trip with her daughter Marlene, her brother Bill, nephew Bill and niece Jill to Midway, Utah where her mother was raised.

She lived at Ankar Retirement Park for many years. She enjoyed her life there which included socializing at activities and walking with the many friends she made.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents and is survived by her children Marlene, Marilee, Bill, Bob and their spouses; 9 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren; her brother Bill Tiernay and his wife Grace; 3 nephews and a niece.

She was beloved by her family and friends and will be dearly missed. A private family celebration of her life will be held. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made in Shirley’s honor to Whatcom Hospice.
