Robert Edward Staples

Robert Edward (Bob) Staples passed away at St Joseph's Hospital on November 15th, 2012 after neurosurgery. Bob was an ordinary man with an extraordinary personality. He met challenges and accomplished business success with the same attributes: self-deprecating humor, a sharp wit, and stubborn determination. He and his wife, Marjorie (Marge) Cooper, his lifelong friend and partner, despite divorce, opened Zephyr Records in downtown Bellingham in 1975. Bob survived Marge's 2002 death, operated Zephyr 6 more years and retired on his terms in 2008. He shared Marge's passion for collectables with his interests focused on 60's and 70's Rock 'n Roll relics, the impetus for opening Zephyr Records.

Bob was born April 1st, 1941 in Keene, NH to Ethel and Allen Staples. He attended high schools throughout New England and graduated from Greensboro High NC. Bob attended Arlington State University in Texas, where he married Marge. He served as a Medic in the US Army in Germany in '67 & '68. After discharge, Bob and Marge lived in the SF Bay area 7 years during the magical era of Hippies and Rock 'n Roll. He was a generous, congenial free spirit, made friends easily and loved animals, especially his cat Minky. Bob was an avid gardener, who loved to share his harvest with friends and family.

Bob is survived by his brother Bruce Staples (Carol), Idaho Falls, ID and nephews Eric Staples (Sandra), Folsom, CA and Barry Staples (Bernadette), Sugarland, TX. Bob also leaves behind his adopted Bellingham family, Foster Rose, Chris Foss, Geraldine Walker and John Richardson. That family extended to California, where Colin and Lisa McCluskey reside and he loved as though they were his children. Countless friends, employees and customers will all miss his gentle spirit.

Bob’s life celebration will be held Saturday, March 9, 2013, 3:00 PM – 6:00 PM at the home of Chris Foss and Foster Rose, 2663 North Park Drive, Bellingham, WA 98225.
