Obituary

Kathy Morgan, a lifelong resident of Ferndale, passed away on March 14th after a brief illness. Kathy was born Paula Kathleen McKay in Bellingham on October 18, 1946. She grew up on her family's dairy farm on Paradise Road with parents Donald E and Evelyn McKay and twin brothers Ron and Don. After graduating from Ferndale High School in 1964, she briefly attended Western Washington University.

Kathy was a devoted mom, grandma, and great-grandma. She truly enjoyed being part of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s daily lives. She also loved her nieces and nephews dearly, and was happy to be thought of as aunt or grandma to any kid.

Her passion for Campfire began early. In her late teens and early twenties, she was a Campfire club leader and a camp counselor at Camp Kirby. Later, she was the club leader for her daughter Beki’s club, and worked for the Campfire organization, helping with recruitment, developing new clubs, and organizing the Campfire booth at the NW Washington Fair. She also dedicated countless years organizing and running Campfire day camp at Hovander Park, helping create many special memories for generations of children.

Kathy loved to sew, knit and crochet. She was a wonderful seamstress and often made clothes for herself and children in their early years along with many formal dresses for daughters, nieces and neighbors. Later on, she would make sure her grandkids had beautiful cozy blankets from Grandma.

Kathy was also very involved in her husband Dave’s hot air ballooning endeavors, participating in many ballooning events in the area.

Kathy was known for arriving at McKay & Winslow family gatherings “fashionably late” but always with a big bowl of her mother's (“Grandma K’s”) famous potato salad, finger jello in a rainbow of colors, and in more recent years - a large Tupperware bowl of “pigs in a blanket.”

Kathy is survived by her husband, Dave; her daughters, Tami Richards (Steve) and Beki Bernier (Greg); her granddaughters, Jazmin Johnson, Ashley Richards, Kaity Richards, Nicci Richards and Morgan Keith; and her great-grandchildren, Trey, Bella, Xavier, Leighton and Artemis. She also leaves behind her beloved dog, Allie, and a large extended family who will miss her dearly.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Donald and Evelyn McKay; her brother, Don McKay; her nephews, Brian McKay and Keith McKay; her great nephew Bryce McKay and her faithful canine companion, Rascal.

A celebration of life gathering will be held at the Squalicum Boat House, 2600 Harbor Loop, Bellingham WA, on Friday, April 10 from 12:00 to 3:00PM with a memorial service at 1:00 p.m.
