On November 7, 2024, the world got way less cool. After a hard-fought battle with sarcoma, Marty McEachern drifted away from this world. He was a devoted father, adoring husband, loving brother, and lifelong rock ’n roll enthusiast. Marty leaves behind his wife Erin, daughters Maya and Hanna, sister Lynn, as well as an extended family including in-laws, cousins, nieces, nephews, a wide circle of friends and large community.
Marty was a true character. His big heart, booming voice and charm touched everyone who crossed his path. Whether he was cheering on his daughters at sports games or dance recitals, lighting up the room with his larger-than-life presence, or cranking up his favorite Rolling Stones album, he lived each moment with an enthusiasm that could not be contained and was often infectious.
As a husband, he was not only a partner but a true soulmate. Together, Marty and Erin built a beautiful, messy, joyful home full of inside jokes, hilarious shenanigans and boundless, unconditional love. His relationship with Erin was one of laughter, shared adventures, and mutual respect. They were married in 1997 and built an extraordinary life together, which eventually included their daughters, Maya and Hanna.
Marty was completely devoted to his girls. Growing up with him was a constant adventure. He was known for his Hop-A-Longs, BBQ skills, turning regular bath time into spa days, and epic bike rides. While attending one of their many functions, a hearty and unmistakable “Whooo” could be heard when they did anything from scoring a goal or basket to singing or dancing.
Marty was born July 30, 1961 to Imogene and Neil McEachern in the Dalles, Oregon. Two years later he was joined by his frequent shadow, first best friend, and most loyal sister Lynn. Marty and Lynn lived their lives believing the best gift they received from their parents was each other. The family moved to Wenatchee in 1972. Marty and Lynn have fond memories of riding horses and motorcycles, playing at Porter’s Pond, and working in cherry orchards. It was during this time that Marty found one of the loves of his life, rock-n-roll: the Rolling Stones, David Bowie, Led Zeppelin and many others. Marty moved to Skagit County in 1982. In 1987 he found Alcoholics Anonymous and began a journey of sober living. In 1990, he fell in love with Erin who was honored to be by his side for the rest of his life. Marty and Erin made their home in Bellingham with their daughters.
Marty was well known for his strong work ethic. Over the years he worked as a commercial fisherman, at a chicken farm, and as a record store manager, among other things. In 1999 he got a job at UPS and worked there until cancer forced his retirement earlier this year. Marty was a proud member of Teamsters local 231. He loved being a Teamster and believed in the importance of a strong union.
Marty’s enormous energy lives on in each of us, and the world is a little quieter without him.
We will celebrate the loud, boisterous, joyful life of Marty on January 12, 2025 at the Bellingham Cruise Terminal at 1 pm. Marty disliked formality and “itchy” clothes. He would want people to come as they are and be comfortable at his celebration of life with no expectation of “dressing up”.
