Marinus “Rene” Lagerwey, age 86, of Blaine, passed away peacefully Saturday, January 26, 2013 in Bellingham, WA. He was born Feb. 24, 1926 in Shepherd, Montana. The son of John and Adriana Lagerwey.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, John, Bill, Arie, Gerrit, Johan (Joe), Nick; sisters, Minnie and Katherine and a step son Wesley Budde. Marinus is survived by his wife Joyce; daughter, Nancy Hecock and children Shelia Courage, Tammy Mendivil (Jude) Rick Hecock (Anna) and Angie Ackerman; son, Steve Lagerwey (Patty) and children Shane Lagerwey (Stacy) and Tom Vanderberg; son, Leroy Lagerwey (Debbie) and children Monty, Ben, Dustin (Lisa), Cody (Alicia) and Jared Lagerwey; step son, Jeff Budde and step daughter, Melisa Shadbolt (Bart) and children Courtney, Levi and Allison. Twenty-five great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters, Marie Vander Giessen, Alida Crabtree, Clazina Schouten (Bill) and his brother Matt Lagerwey (Shirley). Marinus was twelve years old when the family moved to Whatcom County.

He was a dairy farmer on the Northwood Road until his retirement in 1980. He bought the Lunch Bucket Restaurant in 1984 and retired from there in 1991. He moved to Blaine in 2001 and resided there until his passing. A celebration of life service will be held at Christ the King Church in Lynden WA at 11:00 AM on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013. The family suggests donations be made to the Whatcom Hospice House, 2800 Douglas Ave., Bellingham, WA 98225.
