Marian Bernice Haaland

Marian Bernice Haaland, age 93, passed away suddenly in Bellingham, Washington on March 4, 2018. Marian was born to Peder & Elida Pederson in Bottineau, North Dakota on April 28, 1924. Marian married Donald Clarence Haaland on December 3, 1943. They met when Marian was 13 years old.. Marian and Donald had two children: Donny David Haaland and Vernon Dale Haaland. They made the move with the family to the Pacific Northwest in the 1950s.  Marian worked as an accountant for Griffith Furniture for several years. Marian and Donald were very involved in their local church, both loved to travel with their pick-up and camper in tow, taking them too many states across the country. Her family remembers her to be generous, steadfast, stoic in the face of pain, and constant in her unconditional love. She was a woman of tremendous faith, praying daily and by name for those whom she knew and loved. She loved to play Rummikub, never forgot a birthday or anniversary, and was also known to be playful, sneaking candy corn to her grandchildren in church and flickering the porch light to say goodbye when her grandkids were pulling out of the driveway after a visit. You could not have left her home without her pressing cookies or fun-sized Snickers bars into your hands, and refusing these offers was utterly pointless – she always got her way when it came to feeding the people she loved. She left no debt unsettled, insisting on paying kind neighbors for their help around her home, and even insisting on her deathbed that her granddaughter take the money she was owed for getting grandma groceries earlier in the week. She loved to share stories of her childhood & growing up years as well as stories of her early married life when Donald was deployed for WWII. And while ever the put together lady, she could also pick apart the defensive lines of the Seahawks with the utmost confidence. Marian was preceded in death by her husband Donald, her brother Oliver Pederson and great-grandson Ewan Petermann. She is survived by her sons - Don Haaland (wife Penni), Dale Haaland (wife Mary), grandchildren Kimberly Lund (husband Gil), Peder Haaland (wife Annie), Kirsten (husband James) Petermann, and Kaari Haaland, and her great-grandchildren: Campbell Lund, Gunnar Lund, Austen Petermann, Griffin Haaland, Streiter Petermann, and Harper Haaland. A private graveside service was held at Greenacres Cemetery in Ferndale on Thursday, March 8, 2018. Memorial gifts can be given to Northlake Community Church Missions or the The Firs Camps & Retreats.
