Leola Ellen Dwight, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on August 31, 2025, at the age of 90.
Leola was born on December 21, 1934, in Sedro-Woolley, Washington, to Waldo Emerson Alley and Cecile Opal Alley. Her family eventually moved to Ferndale, Washington, where she attended school and graduated from Ferndale High School in 1954.
After graduation, Leola worked as a dental hygienist in Ferndale. In May of 1955, she met the love of her life, Floyd Dwight, on a blind date. Their connection was instant—they were engaged just a month later and married on October 22, 1955. Their devoted marriage lasted nearly 70 years and was a beautiful example of enduring love and partnership.
Floyd and Leola eventually settled in the Laurel area, where they raised their three children. After several years devoted to her growing family, Leola re-entered the workforce—first as a beautician, and later as a talented seamstress. She worked in that field until her retirement in the late 1980s.
Leola had a deep love for quilting, a passion she shared lovingly with many of her grandchildren. She poured her creativity and love into each quilt, all of which became cherished gifts that wrapped her family in warmth long after they left her hands. Her quilts, each made with care and creativity, became treasured family heirlooms and a testament to her warmth and generosity.
In the early 1990s, Floyd and Leola moved to Ferndale, where they made their home for 31 years. Following Floyd's retirement in 1995, the couple enjoyed many years traveling in their RV, camping and fishing with family and friends, and savoring time together in the great outdoors. They later moved to Lynden in 2025.
Leola will be remembered for her unwavering devotion to her family, her warm and gracious spirit, and the quiet strength with which she lived her life. She was deeply loved and will be profoundly missed.
She is survived by her children: son Frank Dwight, daughter and son-in-law Leanne and Jim Unruh, and son and daughter-in-law Tim and Ashley Dwight; grandchildren: Jessie Dwight, Angie Davidsen, Amy Garza, Alissa Dwight-Blume, Kristen Corning, Sarah Warren, Tyson Unruh, Kailey Unruh, and Asher Dwight; and 18 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters, Agnes DuBay and Naoma Tiffany.
Leola was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Dwight, and her brothers: Alfred Alley, Ned Alley, and Earl Alley.
A private family service will be held to celebrate her life. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Leola’s memory to Whatcom Hospice.
