Kurt E. Mauer

Kurt E. Mauer, born April 25, 1941, Walsrode (Hamweide) Germany to Martha (Dittmer) and Erich Mauer. Passed away February 11, 2014 peacefully at home in Ferndale, WA.

Kurt was apprenticed in Germany as a mechanic before immigrating to Seattle, WA in 1960. He attended Ballard High School to learn English and graduated with the class of 1962 at the age of 21. While living in Seattle he was employed at a local restaurant and also worked as a mechanic on race cars and hydroplanes. In 1966 he moved to Whatcom County and Kurt worked for North Washington Implement in Lynden before starting as a heavy duty mechanic at Intalco, where he eventually retired. Kurt was also a member of the Delta Fire Department for over 30 years before retiring not too long ago. He had worked many years for Northwest Podiatric inventing and fabricating machinery used in their manufacturing lab. He also worked for Evergreen Custom Services, owned by his son-in-law, Randy Lindquist. Kurt invented a remote control system that is used to control pumps from a distance on farms which is now used by many in the farming industry.

Kurt was an inventor at heart. If there was a tool or machine he needed that could not be purchased, or was not good enough or powerful enough, he made it himself. Kurt was always available when someone needed a vehicle or some sort of equipment repaired or modified. He loved to help anyone and everyone. If Kurt couldn't fix it, it couldn't be fixed. He also enjoyed restoring cars for friends. Recently Kurt took great pride in passing along some of his many tools and his advice to Grandsons Max and Cody who are pursuing careers in automotive mechanics/technology. Kurt loved his Woods Coffee and those at the Fairway Woods in Lynden knew him by name and by drink.

Kurt married Dana in 1997. She has taken such very good care of Kurt during the last few years as he suffered from a failing heart. She made it possible for Kurt to keep doing what he loved to do, right up to the day he passed. He loved her dearly.

Kurt was preceded in death by his parents of Germany and sister Erika Mauer of Germany. He is survived by his loving wife, Dana of the family home. Daughter Vicki and husband Randy Lindquist of Everson, daughter Debbie Schmutzler of Blaine, son-in-law Al Schmutzler of Blaine. Stepson Jason Montgomery of Ferndale, stepdaughter Tara Montgomery of Anacortes. Grandchildren Brent (Briana Alzola) Lindquist of Anacortes, Brittney Schmutzler and Max Schmutzler of Blaine, Kelsey (Darren) Groen of Lynden, Cody Lindquist of Everson and little granddaughter Willow of Anacortes. Great Grandson Brant Groen of Lynden. Sister Margaret Menezes of Lake Stevens and sister Barbel (Karl) Bockelman of Germany. And many nieces and nephews. Parents in law Jim and Kathy Jordan and family. As well as former mother in law Violet Carlson Evans of Lynden.
