Born in Sumas, WA, to Frank and Grace Olesen, Jim graduated from Nooksack Valley High School in 1947. Subsequently, Jim worked in the woods and drove truck until 1952, when he joined the Navy and served in San Diego, CA. After the Navy, Jim joined his father on the mink ranch. Together, they developed a rare breed of Tyrian Glo mink. Jim eventually took over the ranch and ran it for over 40 years. Jim was also a Past Master of the Masonic Lodge.

On Oct. 7th, 1955, Jim married Fae Lobban, the love of his life. They raised 4 children and enjoyed over 61 years together.

Jim was an avid sports fan, especially of the Washington State Cougars. In his younger years, Jim loved to go hunting with his hounds. After retiring, he became a keen gardener of his prized asparagus. He was always a caring and devoted son, husband, father, and grandfather.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, sister Bertie, infant son Robert Alan, and son-in-law Robert Straka.

Jim is survived by his beloved wife Fae, daughters Karen M. Olesen and Kim J. Straka, sons Jamie (Carrie) and Lyle (Serena) , grandchildren Devin Olesen, Ethan Olesen, Calen Olesen, and Haley Straka, numerous great-grandchildren, and extended family and friends.

A memorial service will be held in his honor on Jan. 28th, 2017 at the Sumas American Legion at 3:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the American Legion and the Lynden Christian Care Center.
