Obituary

Harold (Hal) Roberts age 90, passed away May 29, 2026, in Arlington, WA.  Hal was born to Florence and Harold Roberts on June 15, 1935, in Tacoma, WA. He graduated from Lincoln High School (’53) in Tacoma and entered Western Washington University. He joined the United States Air Force in September of 1955 and spent his time mostly in California, Texas, Oklahoma and Arizona. He married his childhood sweetheart, Ramona Corbin on December 29, 1956, in Tacoma, WA. Upon his discharge in 1959, he resumed his studies at Western and graduated with BA degrees in Science and Education in 1962. He began his career as a teacher in Bellingham, WA at Birchwood Elementary. In 1965 he transferred to Shuksan Junior High and a year later started the majority of his career at Bellingham High School, teaching mostly Biology as well as physical science and earth science. While at Bellingham he coached swimming, golf, and was interim tennis coach for two years. He received his master’s degree in Field Ecology from Northeast Missouri State University (now Truman State), Kirksville, Missouri. After retiring from the school district in 1995 he enjoyed working at Shuksan Golf Course for 20 years. Hal was an avid golfer and took pleasure in collecting golf balls and clubs, particularly putters. Mona and Hal loved to travel, especially to Palm Springs and Hawaii.

Hal was preceded in death by his mother, father and wife, Ramona. He is survived by his Half Brother Dennis Roberts of Tacoma, his Step Sister, Cheri Caldwell (JC) of Tacoma, his daughters Leanne (Frank) Rivas of Marysville, WA and Karin (Greg) Ridgway of Eatonville, WA, grandchildren Taylor (Matt) Jones of Valencia, CA, Taitum (finance Lee O’Keefe) Ridgway of Seattle, Blake (Olivia) Ridgway of Greeley, CO, Step grandchildren Ryan (Suzi) Rivas of Powell, WY, Elisha (Joel) Casparek of Mill Creek, WA and great grandchildren Samantha Rivas, Ryan Rivas, Thomas Casparek, and Lincoln Ridgway. Hal had treasured friendships from the Victor/Williams St. neighborhood and the Cordata neighborhood in Bellingham. He had made new friends of the residents and staff at Fields Senior Living in Arlington. Hal had a special way of making people feel comfortable and valued. He loved to talk and listen to anyone he came in contact with. He will be greatly missed by all of his loved ones.

An Open House reception will be held at The First Congregational Church, 2401 Cornwall Avenue, Bellingham, WA 98225 on Saturday, July 11, 2026 from 10:00-12:00.
