Edward Wesley Neilan, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on May 8, 2025, at the age of 86, after a brief illness, surrounded by his loving family.
Born on August 25, 1938, in Bellingham, Washington, Ed was the son of Gerald and Evelyn Neilan. He spent his formative years in the Silver Beach Lake Whatcom area, where he developed a deep love for the outdoors and the community that would shape his life. After proudly serving in the United States Air Force, Ed returned to Bellingham, where he met Linda Bornstein, while they both worked at Mt. Baker Ski Area. Their meeting grew into a beautiful 63-year marriage, filled with shared adventures and cherished memories.
Ed dedicated 38 years of his life to the Georgia Pacific Tissue Division, where his strong work ethic and commitment to excellence earned him the respect and admiration of his colleagues. Beyond his professional life, Ed was a true outdoorsman at heart. He found joy in hunting, fishing, gold panning, and camping, often embarking on adventures with his beloved wife and daughters. His passion for NASCAR and pit crewing at Skagit Speedway showcased his adventurous spirit, while summers spent traveling to Alaska and winters in Maui brought him immense joy.
A cowboy at heart, Ed was known for his iconic mustache and his love for the Methow Valley. He participated in the Ride to Rendezvous, spent countless hours around campfires with friends, and rode through the breathtaking Sawtooth and Pasayten Wilderness areas. His cherished property at Twin Lakes was a sanctuary where he created lasting memories with family and friends.
In his later years, the annual Fort Casey Labor Day Family Campout became a highlight for Ed, where he delighted in fishing off the beach with his grandsons, hunting for agates, and savoring sourdough pancakes. His love for family was evident in every moment spent with them, and he took great pride in living in the neighborhood where he grew up, surrounded by the people he loved.
Ed is survived by his devoted wife, Linda; daughters Sharie (Mike) and Kristie (Pete); grandsons Steven and Andrew; brother Vern; sisters Geri and Mary (Randy); sister-in-law Shari; numerous nieces and nephews; and a wide circle of friends across the country. He was preceded in death by his brothers Ron and David, sisters-in-law Ardie and Carol, and brother-in-law Linn.
Ed cherished the simple pleasures of life, often enjoying a cup of coffee with his immediate family and siblings. His favorite campfire song, “Navajo Rug,” will forever evoke tears and smiles, reminding us of the warmth and love he brought into our lives.
In honor of Ed’s memory, memorial donations may be made to Whatcom County Hospice House or a charity of your choice. At his request, no services will be held.
Ed will be deeply missed but fondly remembered for his adventurous spirit, unwavering love for his family, and the countless memories he created throughout his remarkable life.
