Don R. Jansen passed away peacefully on Friday, February 17, 2017 at the age of 82 after a long battle with Alzheimers. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Chandra Jansen, son Steve (Rena), daughter Stephanie (Jeff Starkenburg), sister Charlotte (Rob Brand), grandchildren Heidi Finkbonner (Brad Finkbonner), Saree Arends (Tully Arends), Bryant Jansen, Ashley Sadnick and 7 great grandchildren.
Don was born in Bellingham and graduated from Bellingham High School. He attended Washington State University (life long Coug!), and graduated from Western Washington College with a Masters in Mathematics. Don was always a “Numbers Man”.
After serving in the Army, he taught at Bellingham and Sehome High Schools and coached Track and Cross Country. He retired after 30 years of teaching.
Don was passionate about hunting, fishing and looked forward to his Tuesday Poker Night with the Boys. He always loved nothing more than playing with his grand kids and great grandkids. He was blessed to have many close friends over the years.
Don was an accomplished wood worker and during his retirement built craft items, furniture, multiple playhouses, a tree house, a chicken coop and anything else requested by his family.
Don and Chandra attended Cornwall Church and during the last 7 years were very involved with the local Alzheimers Society and developed many close relationships and received a great deal of support from a group of very caring and loving people.
A celebration of his life will be held in the summer, date and location to be announced. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the local Bellingham Alzheimers Society:
