Charles "Sonny" Bylsma

March 19, 1938 — July 15, 2025

Lynden

Charles “Sonny” Dow Bylsma, age 87, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, surrounded by family at Shuksan Healthcare Center in Bellingham, Washington. He faced several health challenges over the last several years with courage and the constant support of his loved ones.

Born, March 19, 1938 and raised in Ferndale, Washington, Sonny married his high school sweetheart, Beverly, on June 1, 1957. Their 68 years of marriage were filled with love, shared adventures, and unwavering devotion. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, deeply admired by family, friends, and coworkers alike.

Sonny is survived by his beloved wife, Beverly; his sister, Dixie Pottle; his sons, Rocky Bylsma (and spouse Ruth Danielsen) and Randy Bylsma (and spouse Kelly Bylsma); his grandchildren, Kallie and Nate Schmidt, Zack Bylsma, Conrad Bylsma, and Shelby Bylsma; and his great-grandson, Lincoln Schmidt. Family gatherings, especially during the holidays, were cherished times that brought him immense joy.

Throughout his life, Sonny was known for his strong work ethic, hands-on spirit, and passion for improving everything he touched. Alongside Beverly, he enjoyed the journey of purchasing, renovating, and lovingly customizing their homes in Ferndale, Birch Bay, and Lynden. A true tinkerer and enthusiast, Sonny spent countless hours restoring classic cars, trucks, tractors, and just about anything with wheels.

His path began on his father’s chicken farm, but it wasn’t long before he carved his own way—starting with car detailing at a local dealership as a teenager, moving into truck driving and heavy equipment operation, and eventually excelling in local crane service sales. Along their journey together, Sonny and Bev also traveled the country on a hydroplane boat racing tour for a few years, and they took great enjoyment from that experience.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and caregivers who provided such compassionate care over the past several years.

At Sonny’s request, no memorial service will be held.

He will be remembered for his warm smile, sharp wit, great sense of humor, and the love he gave so freely to those around him.
