Burt DeKriek

On August 20, 2025, Burt DeKriek, age 51, was called home to Jesus after a rapid and courageous battle with early onset Alzheimer’s disease. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by his wife and friends.

Burt was born December 11, 1973 to Peter and Carol (Koops) DeKriek in Bellingham, Washington. Shortly after his birth, the family moved to Chino, California, where Burt spent most of his childhood. In 1986, Burt and his family moved back to Lynden. As the only brother of three sisters, Burt’s unusual noises and wild outbursts kept the girls on their toes daily. He was his mother’s pride and joy, and he was referred to as her “Boykee”.

During the summer of 2013, Burt sent a message to a girl on Christianmingle.com and started his and Leslie (Roosma)’s love story. They dated for a few months before getting married on September 20, 2014. They were blessed with almost 11 years of marriage. Burt loved the sun, golf, listening to classic rock from the 60s and 70s, and watching movies. A man of quiet faith, Burt loved his Lord and his family fiercely. He wasn’t blessed with children of his own, but adored his many nieces and nephews.

Burt was preceded in death by his grandparents and his dad, Pete DeKriek. He is survived by his beloved wife Leslie, his mom Carol, his sisters Pam (John) DeRose, Denise (Glenn) Bergsma, and Sharon (Davian) DeKriek, his in-laws Jerry and Brenda Roosma, his sisters and brothers in law, Erin (Daniel) Vander Kooi, Matt (Sarah) Roosma, 15 nieces and nephews, and 11 great nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Burt’s life will be held August 28, 2025 at 4:00pm at First Reformed Church in Lynden, preceded by a private graveside service at Greenwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Lynden Christian School Capital Campaign.
