Stan enlisted in the Navy and served from 1952 to 1954 as a gunner on the destroyer USS Woodson. He worked for the Bonneville Power Administration at Chief Joseph Dam in Bridgeport and belonged to the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. In 1961, Stan was appointed by the mayor to be the city Civil Defense chairman, a post that he held for several years. In the early 1960’s, Stan volunteered to be the manager for the Little League team, the Pirates. In 1962, Stan led his team to the city championship.
On October 27, 1973, Stan and Clara Morris were married in Bridgeport. Stan continued to work for BPA while both he and Clara also worked on the apple orchard. When Stan turned 55, he retired and he and Clara began to travel. They bought a fifth wheel RV and became snowbirds from December until February traveling down to California to meet with Stan’s siblings and spend the winter months. The Sterley brothers planned many family reunions and explored many parks in Washington State during the summers. Over the years, Stan and Clara took a cruise to the Bahama Islands, flew to Europe and toured Scotland, England, France, Italy, Spain and Germany via bus. They also flew to Australia, New Zealand and Tahiti. They sold the orchard and moved into town and became very active in city events. As enthusiastic members of the Lake Woods Golf Club, Stan loved his weekly meets with his Bridgeport friends on the course. Stan was also active in the American Legion Bridgeport Post 218. He enjoyed gathering with his fellow veterans on Veterans Day and placing flags on the graves of veterans interred in the Bridgeport City Cemetery.
Stan was a kind man, always quick to laugh, joke or give a compliment. He enjoyed boating, water skiing, fishing, country music, and classic cars.
Stan is survived by his wife, Clara, of Lynden, his son, Bradley, his daughter, Brenda, of East Wenatchee, and Clara’s children Jed Morris, Sherrie Ebenal, and Ted Morris. Stan was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and Grace, and his older brothers Lester, Neil, Bruce, Glenn and Delbert.
